From the time I was very young, I had the heart of an artist and remain a lover of all things artistic. I relish creation in whatever form it takes: music, design, sculpture, architecture, writing, cooking—anything!
Early in my life, my activities and training centered on things musical and theatrical, resulting in a degree in music education. I spent the first six years of my career as a school band director. Though I have taught reading and writing now for almost a decade, I continue to conduct a local community band, and most of my thinking as a teacher, a writer, a cook, a parent, or anywhere else is influenced by my musical roots.
Years devoted to teaching the English language arts at the middle school level have sparked in me a love for writing that has culminated in a master's of the fine arts degree in creative writing. While my focus was in fiction, I work in many areas now.
Much of my life now centers on my wife, Lacy, and our two joyful children. Between those I care for at home and those I teach at school, children have become a significant part of my life.
In everything I do, it is my desire to help bring value to those I serve, whether it be through discovering the great joys of literature, leading the way through a vivid story, discovering new ways of thinking about things, or learning how to rediscover one's own identity.
